Marianne Botha was born in South Africa. She studied Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University where
she majored in painting. During this time Marianne was awarded numerous scholarships and
grants to further her studies. She graduated at the top of her undergraduate class and then went
on to do her Masters Degree in Fine Art.
She participated in numerous local and national juried shows in South Africa, and had two solo
shows. In 1999, shortly after completing her studies, she moved to London, England where she
participated in a number of group shows and had a solo show in 2004. In 2003 she was selected
as one of the Winsor and Newton Young Artists Finalists for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 116th
Exhibition. Marianne moved to Toronto, Canada in December 2005. Since then her work has
been shown in Toronto in group shows, in New York and in a Museum show entitled: “South
African Art: Modern Art and Cultural Development in a Changing Society” in the Danubiana
Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava.
Her current work explores concepts around post-colonial hybridity. African and North American
birds are combined to form new birds, paralleling the immigrant identity and experience.
